It was designed by Viktor Kalmykov, who became the author of projects for many cinemas across the Soviet Union.
In 1963, the facade of the building was decorated with colorful ceramic panels, the authors of which are the artists Sabitzhan Bakashev, Alexei Kamenskii, Alexander Voronin and Zaur Khabibulin.
Initially, they wanted to call the this the “Avangard cinema”, but the poet Zhoomart Bokonbaev suggested the name "Ala-Too" and the name stuck since.
In 1981. it was given the status of a monument of history and culture and is currently under state protection.
In 2007, the building of the cinema was restored and was equipped with modern technology, thanks to which the cinema began to show films in 3D. "Ala-Too" Cinema does not lose attendance, and is still loved amont the locals to this day.
